PORTSMOUTH, Va. - Police are investigating a homicide that happened Monday morning.
Officers said they responded to the 1400 block of Portsmouth Boulevard for a shooting incident just before 10 a.m.
Police said the incident is now an active homicide investigation.
The victim was a 19-year-old Melvin M. Moses who had multiple gunshot wounds. Portsmouth Fire & Rescue arrived on scene and found that Moses' wounds were fatal.
Police have not stated whether they have anyone in custody in connection with his death.
The incident happened a couple of blocks away from Brighton Elementary School. A representative of the school told News 3 that summer school was in session during the time of the incident.
One neighbor said the violence is hitting too close to home and that he knows some of the people directly affected.
"These young guys, they need to learn foundations and principles and respect for family - that’s it," said Donte Lee. "We need to bring respect and loyalty and true friendship back."
Lee added that he wasn't in the area at the time, but came by afterward because he knew his mother would be frantic.
"I know she’s worried because she probably thinks it’s me," described Lee. "And that’s sad that my mom gotta run out here and probably think her son’s under the cover."
Tuesday, detectives announced they were searching for a suspect vehicle, but as of Wednesday police said the vehicle in question was located and was no longer of interest to the investigation.
