SOUTHAMPTON Co., Va. – The Southampton County Sheriff's Office is searching for three suspects in an attempted robbery that left a store clerk injured.

According to deputies, at 2:21 a.m. Friday, deputies were called to the 32000 block of Main Street in Boykins to JIA Inc., a 24-hour gaming establishment, in reference to an attempted robbery and shooting.

Witnesses told deputies that what appeared to be three black males arrived in a dark-colored sedan, then approached the rear entrance of the business, one person at a time. After the first man entered the business, a second approached the door pointing a handgun at the clerk while the third man remained outside.

The clerk saw the man approaching with his gun drawn and pulled out his own weapon, at which time the man shot the clerk one time, striking his left arm. The clerk was unable to shoot his gun.

After the shot was fired, all three of the men fled to the vehicle and left the area without taking anything from the business.

The clerk was later taken to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital and was listed in stable condition.
