VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. - An overnight fire killed a man in the City of Virginia Beach.
Around midnight, the Virginia Beach Fire Department responded to a reported house fire in the 1600 block of Mill Landing Rd.
Crews found heavy fire coming from the back of the house.
Officials said one fatality was reported as a result of the fire and that the age of the victim is unknown.
There were also several cats in the home, and their status is currently unknown.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
Neighbors told News 3 an older man who kept to himself lived there alone.
This fire is just the latest tragedy in several recent blazes in Hampton Roads.
Firefighters say house fires increase from December - February and the most common type are kitchen and heating fires.
The Virginia Beach Fire Department reminds residents to have working smoke detectors inside your house and to check them once a month.
