VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. - A big celebration happened Wednesday morning for Police Chief Jim Cervera.

Friday, following over four decades of service, Chief Cervera will be retiring from the Virginia Beach Police Department.

The city code says first responders have to retire at age 65.

The police department honored Chief Cervera with a farewell salute Wednesday morning.

Officers lined up on Princess Anne Road to salute the chief as the motor carriage drove by and headed to the first precinct.

News 3 was there for the big celebration.

Later Wednesday, News 3 anchor Barbara Ciara conducted a special one-on-one interview with Chief Cervera looking back at his career, in which he talked about the mass shooting that rocked the city in 2019 and life beyond the police department.
