NORFOLK, Va. - Norfolk Police are currently investigating a shooting that killed a man with life-threatening injuries late Wednesday night.

Reports say the shooting took place in the 5400 block of Greenplain Road. Authorities received a call for the incident around 11:55 p.m.

The victim, Marvin J. Milton Jr., 22, of Norfolk, was taken to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital, where he later died from his injuries.

"It's never shocking to me when someone gets killed in this day and time," said Bernard "Peewee" Thompson, a community activist. "I've been knowing that young man for years. His family comes from a good family. My heart is heavy."

A similar scene played out in Portsmouth early Thursday morning. Police found a woman dead on Cavalier Boulevard near the railroad tracks.

Thompson, like many others in the community, is pleading for an end to gun violence across Hampton Roads.

"I'm begging you to please please put the guns down," said Thompson.

His plea comes from a personal experience.

"I lost my son to gun violence April 12, 2012, which was 10 years ago last month," said Thompson.

Although the pain is still fresh, Thompson said he hopes the suspects involved are brought forward to bring the family some closure.

News 3 spoke with close friends of the 22-year-old man killed in Norfolk. While they did not want to speak on camera, they told us that a bright light has sadly been dimmed and they will miss his outgoing personality.

We also spoke with the girlfriend of the woman shot in Portsmouth, and she wasn't ready to speak on camera Thursday.

There have been no arrests in either case.
