Tactical situation in Newport News cleared, suspect in custody

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - Newport News Police responded to a tactical situation on Friday afternoon.

The incident happened on Pamela Drive and police said it was domestic related.

Officers said a 44-year old man was barricaded inside a home and reportedly was was armed. Police Chief Drew said officers were "very concerned" due to the type of fire power he indicated he had.

Police said after an investigation, they determined the subject was "agitated and extremely dangerous."

He made several threats against law enforcement, officers said. Negotiations with the subject continued until he surrendered at 1:10 p.m.

The man was taken into custody and will be medically evaluated, police said. Chief Drew said if he did have the fire power as indicated that they would remove those firearms.

No injuries were reported and the investigation remains ongoing.
