NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - Interested in being a firefighter? The Newport News Fire Department's application period is open!

The department says that EMT and Fire certifications are preferred but not required. According to a flier created by the department, the starting salary is $42,000 yearly, with adjustments for those who have prior experience and certification.

The hiring process for firefighters and medic recruits is open until May 24. Since the current process of hiring has changed from previous processes, make sure to read the selection process steps.

The Newport News Fire Department is comprised of dual-role personnel. Firefighter-Medics rotate their emergency response duties between ambulance and fire apparatus. Due to their dual-role responsibilities, once hired, recruits are required to successfully graduate from two separate structured recruit training programs designed to maximize their dual-role capabilities:

  • Requires completion of the Hampton Roads Recruit Fire Academy (HRRFA), Tidewater Regional Fire Academy (TRFA) or any similar fire academy approved by the department.
  • Must obtain and maintain Advanced EMT (AEMT) certification, and successfully complete the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians Testing Process.

Recruits are compensated during training in extensive fire and emergency medical academies. Upon completion of Fire and EMS programs, Firefighter and medics will earn a competitive salary while averaging ten working days per month.
