SUFFOLK, Va. -- The Suffolk LGBT Center is a new non-profit organization that opened up to help the LGBT community in the city of Suffolk and Western Tidewater.

The center, however, does not have a building of its own, but it is already helping people. For example, the center is providing free HIV and STD testing the first Saturday of every month.

The first HIV/STD testing event was held Saturday, Feb. 6 at Pour Favor on Main Street. The event was from noon to 4 p.m. and was open to everyone, not just the members of the LGBT community, according to Mia Feliu, the organization's community outreach manager. Other services they hoped to bring include social groups and counseling services.

Feliu told News 3 that the new Suffolk LGBT Center would make it easier to access services for those who need those LGBT-centric services. She said the closest LGBT center is in Norfolk and would result in a trip of up to an hour for some users.

The Suffolk LGBT Center has a GoFundMe to raise money for a location of its own. The goal is $100,000.
