WASHINGTON - The Department of Defense has enacted new domestic travel restrictions in an effort to stop the spread of the COVID-19 coronavirus outbreak.

Deputy Secretary of Defense David Norquist approved the new measures Friday.

The restrictions impact service members, Defense Department civilians and family members. The measure halts all domestic travel, including permanent Change of Station moves and temporary duty.

Effective Monday, service members are only authorized local leave.

The Defense Department says exceptions, "may be granted for compelling cases where the travel is mission-essential, for humanitarian reasons, or warranted due to extreme hardship."

The domestic travel restrictions come following international travel restrictions enacted by the Pentagon last week.
