NORFOLK, Va. — A Norfolk man has been arrested and charged with several crimes following what Norfolk police are calling a domestic-related altercation in the Lafayette Park area near the Virginia Zoo Sunday afternoon.

Sharifa T. Elliott, 45, has been charged with domestic assault, attempted malicious wounding, use of a firearm, discharging a weapon in public, reckless handling, and two counts of child abuse, police said.

Elliott is being held in jail without bond.

Police tape and several squad cars could be seen in the area of the Zoo Sunday afternoon.

The Zoo said the incident did not occur on its property, but a spokesperson said they did execute their safety protocols due to the proximity. All people an animals at the Zoo were safe, the spokesperson said.
