NORFOLK, Va. — Norfolk Police officers exchanged gunfire Friday night with a man they believed to be a wanted suspect, Chief Mark Talbot said.

At 8:18 p.m. in the 900 block of Bagnall Road, officers saw the suspect and attempted to speak to him, but he took off on foot. He got about a block before a shootout took place between the man and officers, according to Talbot.

The suspect was shot multiple times, "not sure how many times," Talbot said, and is in the hospital in serious condition.

After being shot, officers took the man into custody, rendered medical aid, and called for medical attention.

One of the officers was also injured, but not from gunfire; he is expected to be OK.

Ramin Fatehi, commonwealth attorney for Norfolk, said this is the third officer-involved shooting in Norfolk this year.

In January, a man died after being shot by police in Wards Corner.

In March, a man named Santonio Lee, who Fatehi said was wanted for shootings in Norfolk and Virginia Beach, was killed in a shootout with police on Terminal Boulevard.

On scene Friday after the incident, Fatehi said this was not a pattern.

"Officers don't get to choose who exercises deadly force against them. These things can come in bunches or there can be long periods with nothing happening," Fatehi said. "Every case is different. Every case is its own case."
