NORFOLK, Va — A three-vehicle crash Wednesday afternoon on I-64 of the Hampton Roads Bridge Tunnel heading westbound has resulted in one dead, according to Virginia State Police.

A 2024 Volkswagen Jetta was traveling in the left lane when the driver, Tonya Denise Hinkle, 49, hit a 2023 Hyundai Santa Fe from the back around 2:13 p.m.

The impact the Jetta caused the car to hit a wall and bounce back into traffic, where it collided with a 2012 Ford F-150.

Hinkle was then transported to Norfolk General Hospital, where she passed as result of her injuries. Both drivers of the other vehicles suffered minor injuries.

All lanes heading west were closed earlier Wednesday afternoon and traffic was backed up over six miles, but the fatality is not currently affecting the roads, according to the police.

According to VDOT, there is a detour set up at exit 273. Virginia State Police is investigating the crash.
