HAMPTON, Va. - Hampton Police Chief Terry Sult announced in a video to HPD officers and employees that he will resign in 2021.
According to Sult, he notified the city manager of his intent to retire, which will occur "in the next six months to a year."
The transition period will be spent "developing leaders and putting into place leadership development programs," Sult said.
Sult also said that during that time, he will work with the city manager's office to help find Hampton's next police chief.
Sult became chief of the Hampton Police Division in 2013, according to the HPD's website. In the video, Sult said 2020 marks his 50th year in policing.
This is a developing story.
