GLOUCESTER Co., Va. - A school division employee who works at Abingdon Elementary School in Gloucester County is suspected of having the coronavirus.
The Three Rivers Health District informed Gloucester County Public Schools of a possible COVID-19 exposure at the school on March 12 and 13. The employee is said to have worked at the school on those days.
Three Rivers Health Director D. Richard Williams informed the school district that the incubation period for COVID-19 can be up to 14 days, although time from exposure to symptoms is usually 4-5 days. As of Thursday, it has been 13 days from latest possible exposure.
Parents who have noticed respiratory symptoms in their children or in themselves as well as staff members should contact their pediatrician or primary care provider for evaluation and advice.
The Virginia Department of Health says COVID-19 can cause mild to more severe respiratory illness. Experience worldwide indicates children are in the lowest risk group for severe disease.
Symptoms can be extremely mild in some cases and in other cases include fever, cough and difficulty breathing. In a small proportion of patients, COVID-19 can cause complications, including death, particularly among those who are older or who have chronic medical conditions. The virus spreads primarily through respiratory droplets produced when an infected person coughs or sneezes.
Gloucester County Public Schools, in partnership with the Three Rivers Health District, are available to answer any questions you may have. The Three Rivers Health District COVID-19 call center can be contacted at (804) 313-1638 between the hours of 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday-Friday.
