VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. - No shows mean no work for many in the local arts and entertainment scene. This weekend, a food drive aims to put meals on the table.
On Saturday, August 29, a number of arts organizations and museums throughout Virginia Beach are joining together to collect canned and other non-perishable food.
Donations will be split among the Food Bank of Southeastern Virginia and the Eastern Shore and arts and entertainment employees furloughed during the COVID-19 pandemic.
The effort is a partnership between The Sandler Center for the Performing Arts, Zeiders American Dream Theater, The Little Theatre of Virginia Beach, Military Aviation Museum, Museum of Contemporary Art and Lynnhaven House.
"When you're going to a concert or a museum, you're really not seeing everyone behind the scenes, from the stage hands to the custodian team to the venue management staff so there's quite a few employees that have been furloughed or let go," said Megan Boyle with The Sandler Center for the Performing Arts. "When we're not having events or not being able to have people in our building it's hard to maintain those staff levels."
