CHESAPEAKE, Va. — A fire at the Hunter's Point Apartment complex on Linster Street in Chesapeake Friday night injured a child and woman and forced many families out of their homes, firefighters said.
Fire crews got the call just after 10:00 p.m. to the complex in the city's Portlock section.
Crews saw heavy smoke and flames on the first and second floors shortly after arriving on scene, fire officials said.
A child was rescued from a second floor apartment, and a woman was rescued from a first floor apartment, Chesapeake firefighters told News 3.
Saturday, fire crews said the woman was in critical condition and taken to a hospital. Meanwhile, the child suffered minor injuries.
A total of eight apartments sustained significant damage and are no longer livable, Chesapeake fire officials said.
In total, Chesapeake fire investigators told News 3 Saturday afternoon eight families (9 adults and 11 children) were forced out of their homes by the fire.
The Red Cross is helping the families impacted as fire officials continue to investigate what caused the fire.
