Virginia Governor Ralph Northam announced Wednesday that elective surgeries and dental treatments will be allowed to resume when a ban imposed on them expires tomorrow at midnight.

Last week, Northam extended the ban in an effort to reserve capacity in the state’s healthcare system for coronavirus patients and personal protective equipment for providers treating those patients.

New guidelines will be issued to help prevent doctors, dentists and patients from contracting the novel coronavirus.

"If we begin to see cases and hospitalizations rise again, we are prepared to take swift and necessary action," Northam said during Wednesday's press conference.
