Dare County declares state of emergency, orders mandatory evacuations for Hatteras Island ahead of Hurricane Isaias

DARE Co., N.C. - Dare County declared a state of emergency in all areas of the county ahead of Hurricane Isaias, and ordered mandatory evacuations for Hatteras Island visitors and residents beginning Saturday, August 1 at noon.

The evacuation order is for Evacuation Zone A, which covers all areas of Hatteras Island, including the villages of Rodanthe, Waves, Salvo, Avon, Buxton, Frisco and Hatteras Village.

Visitors are asked to evacuate beginning Saturday, August 1 at noon, while residents and property owners are asked to evacuate beginning Sunday, August 2 at 6 a.m.

Dare County decision makers will meet again on Sunday morning, August 2, to receive an updated briefing from the National Weather Service and determine whether protective measures are necessary for Evacuation Zone B. Zone B covers areas north of Oregon Inlet, including the towns of Duck, Southern Shores, Kitty Hawk, Kill Devil Hills, Nags Head, Manteo and all unincorporated areas including Roanoke Island and the Dare mainland.

North Carolina declared a state of emergency Friday night.

The storm is expected to impact coastal North Carolina and Virginia beginning Monday evening. Heavy rain, high winds and potential flooding are expected.
