Western Tidewater region back to 14% COVID-19 test positivity rate

The Virginia Department of Health released their daily updated numbers involving COVID-19 cases within the state.

According to their website, there are now 124,779 total cases, 119,259 of which are confirmed and 5,520 are probable. There are 2,662 total COVID-19 related deaths, with 2,529 being confirmed and 133 being probable.

The case numbers are up by 1,111, and deaths are up by 10 since Thursday. Hampton Roads and surrounding cities reported 190 cases and 2 deaths from the state's total increase. There was 1 death reported in Suffolk and Virginia Beach. Newport News reported the biggest local case increase of 38.

A total of 1,634,308 COVID-19 PCR tests have now been given in Virginia. The Western Tidewater region is back to reporting 14% in test positivity rate. Early August is when the region last saw the percentage that high. For several weeks the region was seeing a slight decrease but has still remained the local region with the highest rate. Virginia's overall COVID-19 test percent positivity rate has not changed by much, only seeing an increase of .1% percent from Thursday's report and now sits at 7.8%.

The Virginia Hospital & Healthcare Association also updated their numbers. As of Friday, there are 828 people currently being hospitalized, confirmed with COVID-19. There are 273 people receiving inpatient hospital care whose test results are still pending. Combined, there are a total of 1,101 being hospitalized for coronavirus related illness. That's 29 less hospitalizations from Thursday.

The total statewide COVID-19 hospitalizations that have been reported over time is now 9,798.

244 confirmed positive patients, and those whose test results are pending, are currently hospitalized in the ICU.

128 hospital patients, both confirmed for coronavirus, and those with test results pending, are currently on a ventilator. 596 ventilators are being used in hospitals out of the 3,090 in the state - that's 19% usage.

15,492 patients who have been hospitalized for coronavirus have been discharged.
