Chincoteague Volunteer Fireman’s Carnival & Pony Penning celebration cancelled due to COVID-19

NORFOLK, Va. - The annual Chincoteague Volunteer Fireman’s Carnival & Pony Penning celebration is now canceled because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Board of Directors of the Chincoteague Volunteer Fire Company voted to cancel the 2020 Chincoteague Volunteer Fireman’s Carnival & Pony Penning celebration scheduled to begin July 2, 2020.

The cancellation of the pony penning celebration is the first time since World War II.

The announcement was made on Facebook by President of the Chincoteague Volunteer Fire Company, Inc., Alex Tucker.

The Board of Directors say, the foals of the pony herd will be sold by way of online auction, with a date to be determined by the Pony Committee.

According to officials, arrangements are being made to where the ponies will physically be during the auction.
