CHESAPEAKE, Va. - The Chesapeake School Board met Monday night to decide what's next for students amid COVID-19.

Based on a vote from parents, more people have voted to move to Option 1 (in-person learning) rather than Option 2 (virtual learning).

Additionally, 1,400 CPS employees received first round vaccine doses, and another 1,400 doses will be given out this week. The school district says daily digital health screenings are no longer required.

School Board members also voted 8-1 to approve fall varsity sports, but cancel JV sports. The "no" vote was because they wanted all sports to return, not just varsity.

According to School Superintendent, Dr. Jared Cotton, “Knowing that all fall sports will be held outdoors, with the exception of volleyball, and that we feel confident that we can implement the recommended mitigation measures effectively with the extra support of the JV coaches, we feel comfortable proceeding. After having to cancel so many school activities so far this year, we are excited that we have found a way to make this happen for our students.”

Decisions regarding the status of spring sports will be made as that season approaches.

“We are excited about starting the fall sports season,” said Kevin Cole, Supervisor of Student Activities. “It gives our seniors a chance to compete and it gives all of our athletes a chance to form lifelong relationships with teammates and coaches.”

Football and competitive cheerleading will begin conditioning on January 28 with practice beginning February 4. Cross-country, field hockey, volleyball and golf will begin conditioning February 1, and practice will begin on February 15.
