CBS News is projecting that Jon Ossoff has defeated incumbent Senator David Perdue in Tuesday's Senate runoff election in Georgia.
Ossoff's win against Perdue, along with Democrat Raphael Warnock's projected win against GOP Senator Kelly Loeffler, ensures that Democrats will hold a 50-50 majority in the Senate. Vice President-elect Kamala Harris will break any tie in the Senate.
This marks a "dramatic shift" for the balance of power in Washington, CBS said.
The runoff results come as supporters of President Donald Trump stormed the U.S. Capitol, forcing Congress to recess while they were set to count the Electoral College votes.
