NORFOLK, Va. - Mountain bikers in Norfolk now have a new place to spin their wheels.

On Saturday morning Bike Norfolk, in partnership with the City of Norfolk, volunteers and local business sponsors, opened the city's first single-track mountain bike trail at Northside Park.

The twists and turns span over two miles, creating a safe haven of sorts for those who love the fast-moving sport.

Mike Merritt, the communications director for Bike Norfolk, said the idea has been in the works for about three years.

"Norfolk has several acres of unused trails that we saw as an opportunity to build single-track mountain bike trails," he said. "Like all projects, you know, there's a seed of thoughts and they keep growing and growing until you actually realize it's a possibility to make it a reality."

If you stop by the trailhead you will find a map of the three trails: two inner loops and an outer loop. They are named Hide and Seek, Trae's Trail and David's Sprint.

You'll notice the trail markings differ between blue and green. Merritt said, "The green trail is easier and the blue-marked trail is more technical."

Helmets are required for all cyclists, but anyone is welcome.

When you're riding these trails, it's not so much about the destination but the enjoyment of the moment.
