VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. – The American Red Cross now offers an expanded variety of online courses, including CPR/First Aid/AED training.
The CPR training is given through an award-winning video simulation that requires the participant to interact. For example, it requires the participant to click the screen 30 times at a certain rate to simulate chest compressions.
Michelle Ellis Young, the Executive Director for the Coastal Virginia chapter of Red Cross, says they’re seeing an increase in participants during COVID-19 and an increase in employers looking to train their workforce.
“You never know when you are going to be the gap-filler between someone who is in a crisis and when the first responders show up,” said Ellis Young. “So, we pride ourselves on ensuring our communities are prepared, and one of the ways that you can be better prepared as an individual is through something as simple as CPR training.”
The American Red Cross also offers other classes online, including “First Aid for Opioid Overdoses,” “Returning to Work During COVID-19,” “Anaphylaxis and Epinephrine Auto Injector,” and “Psychological First Aid: Supporting Yourself and Others During COVID-19.”
Courses start at $20. The classes are available to the public; however, some employers may require further training that includes a face-to-face element.
“The feedback has been very favorable for the online version of the class,” added Ellis Young. “And it’s accessible: Anywhere, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week - just the convenience of being able to do it on your own time.”
