NORFOLK, Va. – Booker T. Washington High School experienced a chemical emergency, late Thursday morning.
According to a Norfolk Public School spokesperson, there was a small chemical spill and a reaction on the second floor in a storage room. Everyone was evacuated from the building.
Battalion Chief Stephanie Ramsey told News 3 they weren't sure exactly what chemical(s) were involved but they were investigating.
NPS said one teacher was taken to the hospital with minor injuries. Chief Ramsey said no students were reported as being injured. She later stated that a hazmat cleanup crew was called.
Students were remaining outside, mostly on the bleachers at the football field while personnel ensured the chemical was neutralized.
NPS says classes will resume Friday as normal.
