BUXTON, N.C. - Four people were confirmed to have died after a large fire broke out in Buxton early Friday morning.
According to Dare County Emergency Management, the fire was reported shortly after 4 a.m. Volunteer fire departments from Buxton, Hatteras and Frisco responded to the fire at 46110 Cape Hatteras Lane.
Crews from the Avon Volunteer Fire Department also responded after a second alarm was sounded, and Dare County EMS, the Dare County Sheriff's Office, Hatteras Island Rescue, the Kill Devil Hills Fire Marshal and the American Red Cross were also on scene to assist.
Two people were taken to the Outer Banks Hospital in Nags Head for treatment of injuries. Dare County Emergency Management said that the names of the deceased are being withheld until the victims' next-of-kin are notified.
The fire caused severe damage to neighboring residences on Cape Hatteras Lane.
The Dare County Fire Marshal is investigating the cause of the fire.
