CHESAPEAKE, Va. - The Chesapeake Police Department is investigating after a shooting left one victim dead and another injured early Saturday morning.
One neighbor who did not want to be identified said she’s known the victim for three years.
“We were really close,” she said. “It’s just a sad situation all the way around. Just pray for Lafayette Avenue. We got to pray for each other. It’s bad out here.”
According to police, at 12:43 a.m., officers responded to the 600 block of Lafayette Avenue for reports of a shooting victim. When officers arrived, they heard shots fired inside the residence.
The neighbor told News 3 the police lights outside her window left her feeling numb.
“I went to my kitchen and the lights were fluorescent back there; I was like, oh my God what’s going on? So, I came out and saw everything,” she said. “I don’t know what happened here but anytime a person dies it ain’t good.”
Police later learned that one victim was dead and another suffered from a gunshot wound. There is currently no information on the surviving victim's condition.
As police work to piece together what happened, neighbors on the street are left shaken, hoping this first homicide of the year doesn’t lead to more violence.
“Something has to be done,” the neighbor said. “There’s too many people dying, just dying behind senseless stuff.”
Police said they have a person of interest in custody. They have not released any information on the suspect or what led to the shooting.
