HAMPTON ROADS, Va. - Democrat Joe Biden carried Chesapeake, Hampton, Newport News, Norfolk, Portsmouth, Suffolk and Virginia Beach in Tuesday’s election, flipping Chesapeake and Virginia Beach from 2016.
News 3 Political Analyst Dr. Eric Claville of Norfolk State University says Virginia Beach flipping to Biden surprised him. Claville believes voters in Virginia Beach are about the bottom line and were not happy about the economic fallout from the pandemic.
While the presidential race is not called yet, going into 2020, the winning candidate has carried Chesapeake in the last five presidential elections. President Trump mostly performed within a percentage point of his 2016 numbers except in Chesapeake and Virginia Beach.
