Les Smith is a Hampton Roads native who first dreamed of being a television news anchor when he watched a man walk on the moon. He got hooked on The CBS Evening News with Walter Cronkite on WTKR, and began working in news while in college at James Madison University.
Les began his career in Harrisonburg, where he worked as an anchor and reporter on radio and television. Les began working in Hampton Roads in 1985. His career has taken him across the country and around the world. He hasn’t yet travelled to outer space, but he hasn’t given up hope.

From his earliest days when he fell in love with the space program, Les has enjoyed the power of television news. Radio and print are important, but only television gives you the complete human experience. Les has been fortunate to travel the world in his career. From Cuba to France to Los Angeles, the stories are different, but the experience is the same. It’s all about people. News is people and people are news. He was taught that many years ago said and it’s just as true today.

Les currently anchors News 3 at 5 and News 3 at 7 on WGNT.
