  • Man to be sentenced in Suffolk officer’s attack

    NewsChannel has learned Joe Staton is scheduled to be sentenced in Suffolk on Monday for nearly beating a Suffolk police officer to death.Back in May, Officer James Winslow pulled Staton over because he was driving a stolen car.Staton took off running and, after a foot chase, he attacked Officer Winslow, causing him to have very bad head injuries.Staton now faces a life sentence plus an aditional 120 years in prison.

  • Boy shot by dad outside of gun shop in Pennsylvania

    A 7-year-old boy was fatally shot by his father outside a gun shop in western Pennsylvania, according to a Pennsylvania State Police report. Joseph Loughrey, the father, had gone in to Twig’s Reloading Den in East Lackawannock Township some time before 11 a.m. to try to sell a 9 mm Taurus handgun and a scope rifle, according to the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review.   • Annual Cops & Kids event takes place in Virginia Beach

    Christmas came early for some kids in Virginia Beach. The annual “Cops and Kids” event was held Saturday at the Target by Pembroke Mall.Santa Claus was there along with local law enforcement to help underpriviledged kids pick out some toys for themselves.The money is donated by the Fraternal Order of Police.     The Army/Navy game was Saturday in Philadelphia and two members of the Midshipmen wore patches in honor of two local sailors.     A University of Virginia student has died after a boating accident, officials tell NewsChannel 3. It happened in the Caribbean country of Dominica. Casey Schulman, a senior at UVA was participating in a Semester at Sea program, but the boating trip was not part of the program’s curriculum. The university held a service for her on Sunday.

  • Volunteers help Cody S. Childers Memorial Fund send care packages to troops

    A mission to send hundreds of care packages to our troops got some extra manpower Sunday morning.  Volunteers in Chesapeake helped Wendy Childers pack 500 care packages for the troops this morning, just in time for Christmas. This was all part of the Lance Corporal Cody S. Childers Memorial Fund. He’s a Marine who was killed in Afghanistan back in 2010.     A bus hit an overpass at Miami International Airport on Saturday, killing at least two people and injuring more than two dozen on board, officials said.
