The Hampton mother who founded Parents Against Bullying is going above and beyond to help children in our community— again.

This time, Shant’a Miller White is using her role as a Community Engagement Specialist for Newport News Public Schools to create a boutique filled with free clothes and hygiene products for students, parents and school staff.

“[I’m] speechless,” said a tearful Shant’a Miller White moments after I surprised her with a News 3 Everyday Hero award and a $300 gift card from our community partners at Southern Bank. “I’m supposed to be here [to help this community].

I surprised Miller White with our Everyday Hero Award in front of a crowd of administrators, teachers and students at Passage Middle School. Miller White opened the free “Mary’s Boutique” at Passage and Gildersleeve Middle School, too.

“It’s not only just clothes in there. That’s a good way to come in and start talking to families about other resources they need outside of the boutique,” said Jametha Ruffin, the principal of Passage Middle School Principal. "It’s a conversation starter.”

During the surprise, Miller White’s profound impact on the students was clear. The students said she was “so deserving” of the award and that her smile “blesses” them.

Miller White is also a throat cancer survivor. During her treatment, she remained committed to advancing the mission of Parents Against Bullying and her advocacy for children in Hampton Roads.
