VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. — We caught up with Virginia Beach resident Ramona Chandler while she and other Aid Now volunteers were shopping for families of children in hospice, one of many local charities they support.

News 3 approached her to present her with an Everyday Hero Award as she filled her shopping cart for the charity.

Since moving here in 2018, Ramona has logged countless hours with Aid Now, a Hampton Roads nonprofit that provides money, clothing, food, and other assistance to those in need.

“Mom is incredibly selfless. She’s always looking for ways to help others, not really looking for anything in return,” said her daughter, Chelsea Chandler Edwards.

The "Families to Families" program distributes groceries weekly to military families struggling to put food on the table.

Whether volunteering at Aid Now or in her everyday life, Ramona Chandler's desire to improve the community defines who she is. Having worked for Norfolk Public Schools, she witnessed the community's needs firsthand.

“These kids would come to school hungry, and we made sure that we had food for them. It came out of our pockets, but it was worth it,” said Chandler.

Chandler also received a gift certificate from Southern Bank, which she said is going right back to Aid Now.

No surprise, because that’s what heroes do.
