VIRIGINIA BEACH, Va. — Virginia Beach Sheriff Rockey Holcomb's inaugural Turkey Bowl kicked off at 11 a.m. at Kempsville High School on Saturday.
The VBSO, VBPD and Virginia Beach EMS take on the Virginia Beach City Public Schools in a friendly flag football game to raise money for the Beach Bags program, according to the sheriff's office. The Beach Bags program is a joint effort between VBCPS and the Virginia Beach Education Foundation to provide take-home meals for kids in need.
Virginia State Sen. Aaron Rouse, VB City councilman Chris Taylor, VB Treasurer Leigh Henderson and the President and Director at Morgan Wellness Center and Chix Beach Gym TJ Morgan are referees. Virginia Beach City Councilman Michael Berlucchi did the coin toss to see which team got the football first.
In addition to flag football, the Turkey Bowl will also have a halftime show, concessions, first-responder equipment displays, VBSO recruiters, child ID, a 50/50 raffle and a raffle for special prizes, according to the VBSO.
The VBSO says that the Turkey Bowl will help support the growing demand for the Beach Bags program.

Beach Bags demand has more than doubled since 2019 when the cost of a bag was $3, according to the VBSO. Last year, more than 45,500 bags were distributed to students at an average cost of $5.25 per bag and administrators expect the demand to continue to increase.
There are 10 individual-size, shelf-stable, easy-to-open items in each bag that are either donated or purchased through wholesalers, according to the VBSO.
