VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. - Virginia Beach educators and public safety officers took over the Kellam High School football field on Saturday in a highlight-filled football game for charity.
The second annual Virginia Beach Sheriff's Turkey Bowl featured teachers and administrators from Virginia Beach City Public Schools on one team and Virginia Beach sheriff's deputies, police officers, firefighters and EMS on the other.
Admission into the game cost $5 with all proceeds going to the Virginia Beach Education Association's Beach Bags programs, which provides students with bags of meals to take home at the end of the day so they don't go hungry at home.
Sheriff Rocky Holcomb, the game's main sponsor, says it's a fun game that's known to get chippy at times.
“This is an awesome relationship with the schools, public safety and the community. It’s funny because a lot of the teachers over there, my public safety guys were their students back in the day and now they’re playing against them in a football game to raise money for Beach Bags so it’s just an awesome opportunity for the community to come together," he told News 3.
News 3 anchor Blaine Stewart and Sports Director Marc Davis served as volunteer referees for the game. Operations Manager Kevin Rafferty announced the game.
The public safety team struck first in the first of two 25-minute halves, but the teachers quickly responded.
In the end, the teachers avenged their loss last year, taking it with a final score of 47-28.
