NORFOLK, Va. — With a heat index north of 100 degrees, even just taking an easy outdoor walk in July can be a struggle.
My brother, who is visiting from Florida, doesn't think it's that hot here.
But he suggested that it would be cooler along the shore, so Mark and I headed out to Willoughby Beach in Norfolk in search of that elusive cooler weather.
Spoiler alert, we didn't find it.
There was a light breeze, but that was like trying to cool off with a blow dryer on high heat.
Feet in the water did help a little bit.
I have to say, though, for a meteorologist, Willoughby Spit is fascinating.
The bay front community was created by a pair of hurricanes in the 17 and 1800s, and the shoreline here still constantly changes.
A huge tide pool we walked around is a great example of how there are always new things to explore!
And you do get a great view of all the work being done at the HRBT.
Traffic in Willoughby can be a real challenge, but there are some great views, and I'm sure any other time of the year it's a little cooler.
So next time you want to get outside and take a walk, consider Willoughby Beach!
