CHESAPEAKE, Va. — The 33rd annual Senior Support Services Seminar took place this week starting April 12, and wrapped up on April 13.
Over 18,000 seniors across the Commonwealth were in attendance to receive community resources, health care services and fellowship with their peers.
The Senior Support Services Seminar is a sponsorship based event in partnership with the Chesapeake Sheriff's Department.
Once a year, the department gathers vendors and senior services to come to the Chesapeake Conference Center to inform our local senior population.
Chesapeake Sheriff Jim O'Sullivan tells News 3 the senior community has a huge impact on him and his department, and the pride themselves on keeping seniors safe.
"Our involvement with the senior community is paramount to us, and we have made it a priority to keep them safe and secure, and to help them understand that there is fraud out there and people tend to prey on them. But that's why we are here to help support and protect them," said the Sheriff.
Throughout the center, seniors had the chance to visit various vendor tables and were also provided with health screenings and Senior ID services.
Wilberta Carter, a member of the Brightstar Red Hat Chapter, tells News 3 she needed to come today because it allowed her to receive knowledge on resources she didn't even know existed.
"We need additional information and since it's all here, all in one spot its easily accessible. We have our club meetings and the resources come to us at the club meetings but this gives us a whole wide range of resources," said Carter.
The next Senior Support Services Seminar is set to comeback in Spring 2024.
