NEWPORT NEWS, Va. — The cherry blossoms in D.C. won't hit peak for a few more weeks, but you don't have to wait that long, or drive that far, to see some!
We just drove up I-64 a few miles last weekend and got to enjoy some nice cherry blossoms a lot closer to home — in Newport News!
We took a stroll through the Japanese Tea Garden at Newport News Park, and while the half-acre garden certainly doesn't rival the Nation's Capital, it's nice to see some cherry tree varieties that bloom a little earlier than most of the ones we expect to see around these parts.
Although I will say that the gusty winds last weekend seemed to be doing a number on the early blooming blossoms.
The cherry trees were donated by Canon Virginia in 1995 to celebrate the company's 10th anniversary in Newport News, and nearly 30 years later, Canon is still one of the city's biggest employers.
And the cherry trees are still putting on a show each spring.
There's a small pond in one part of Newport News Park along with a creek and several bridges, too.
You can see why it's a popular spot for weddings and photo shoots!
The biggest cherry blossom show is usually at Red Wing Park in Virginia Beach, which kicks off it's Cherry Blossom Festival on Mar. 23!
