HAMPTON, Va. — It’s time to take a walk with Patrick, and this week Patrick is looking at a great way to stay motivated to get those steps in with the help of some very special guests.

Very special and very large guests.

You’re probably used to seeing us walk with one of our little dachshunds but this week, our K-9 companions are about 10 times bigger.

Meet Bo and Duke. We’re dog sitting them this week.

And while these guys can be big couch potatoes, they do love their walks.

In fact, there’s no peace in the house until they’ve been around the block a few times.

And that’s a major benefit of having dogs in your house.

Studies show that dog owners have healthier hearts, are less stressed and far more likely to get the right amount of exercise each week.

Bo and Duke are beach dogs, so they’re used to running in the sand and playing in the surf.

That’s great exercise for dogs and humans.

And beginning next week, most area beaches will welcome our dogs back.

Between Labor day and Memorial day, you’re free to visit area beaches with your K-9 friends any time.

There are a few exceptions.

Dog restrictions aren’t lifted until September 15 and return on May 15 on beaches in Hampton and Southern Shores in the Outer Banks.

Also in the Outer Banks, dogs are never allowed on any swim beaches at Cape Hatteras National Seashore.

Remember that all of our area beaches require that you clean up after your dog, don’t be that person.

Also, some beaches do allow your dog to be off leash. Just make sure you check before you go.

And if you know of a great dog walking spot you’d like me to check out, head over to my Facebook page and let me know.
