Reasons why you should consider taking more walks in the winter

Winter begins in only about a week, and that means you better bundle up if you're planning to get your steps in!

But even if you're not a cold weather fan, there are a lot of reasons to embrace the new season.

I'm definitely not a fan of cold weather, so it does take extra motivation to get those steps in.

But here are five reasons why walking in the winter is great!

Number one, more daylight! Throughout winter, the days start to get longer and longer. Add in the return of daylight saving time, and by the start of spring, the sun doesn't set well until after 7 p.m.

Number two? Vitamin D!

Getting out in the winter sunshine promotes the production of Vitamin D, and health researchers say this sunshine vitamin can enhance your body's overall health.

Number three - you can spot elusive wildlife! Fewer leaves on the trees allows you to see some animals that are more active during the winter months.

Number four, you can build resistance!

Have you seen all of those people on social media that are taking ice baths? While there's not a chance that I would ever do that, taking a cold weather walk can help build mental toughness and vie you a sense of accomplishment.

And the fifth reason that walking in the winter is great, you burn more calories!

A cold weather walk requires your body to work harder, meaning that it's a little easier to burn off all those Christmas cookies before spring returns.

And remember, you can always add more layers of clothing in the winter.

There's only so much you can take off in the summer before the neighbors start to complain.
