KNOTTS ISLAND, N.C. — The Great Marsh Trail is just off of the Marsh Causeway and is part of the Mackay Island National Wildlife Refuge just across the state line in Knotts Island.

This is one of the shortest walks we've taken, but there was still a lot to see and definitely worth a visit.

The loop trail is only about a third of a mile long and goes around a small lake that's home to lots of wildlife.

Especially turtles!

Other folks on the path told us they spotted a cottonmouth, so we were on high alert, but we had no run-ins.

We visited after last week's heavy rain, so water levels were high in the lake and the surrounding marshland.

That meant that the path was fairly narrow but still a flat and easy walk. It is surrounded by tall pine trees and marsh grasses.

There are a series of small wooden bridges to cross on the loop. There are no railings, but they all seemed very stable, and some of them offered us great views of the lake and the surrounding marsh.

I think this is a great time of the year to visit because we noticed very few bugs…but I imagine that as the weather gets warmer, that will be changing.
