NEWPORT NEWS, Va. — With Saturday's 70-degree weather, I headed out to the Fountain Plaza at city center in Newport News.
Checking the News 3 weather app, I knew we wouldn't have a whole lot of time between rain showers–and we didn't–but my goal was to make at least one trip around the Fountain Plaza before the wet weather moved in.
City center is a 52-acre mixed use community in midtown Newport News.

It's home to several of the city's major employers, like Cannon USA and Jefferson Lab, and there's lots of office space, shops, restaurants, a theater, hotels, apartments and condos.
It has basically become the new downtown of Newport News, and the 5-acre Fountain Plaza is at the center of it all.
The plaza is home to concerts and festivals throughout the year. There are fireworks and Christmas celebrations there. In the summer, the fountains can make it feel a few degrees cooler.

I'm a big fan of walking there because it's flat, well landscaped and there's plenty to see.
About halfway around the fountains we started feeling the first sprinkles, so we kicked it into high gear and managed to make it around the plaza and back to the car before the rain got too bad.
Remember, it's always a good idea to keep an eye on the radar when you're walking outside, especially in the spring and summer when thunderstorms can develop pretty quickly.
