NEWPORT NEWS, Va. — Rory Chambers, a graduating senior at Warwick High School, has been named a winner of a national essay contest that highlights experiences with cancer.

Rory’s heartfelt essay reflects on their losing their father to cancer when they were 12 years old.

The Cancer Unwrapped Teen Writing Contest, held by nonprofit Cancer Pathways, is held each year. This year, they had over 1,100 submissions. Out of the submissions, only 20 were named contest winners.

A Cancer Pathway spokesperson, who described Rory’s essay as “fantastic, heartfelt and honest,” said the judges were moved by their work.

“We want as many people as possible to read Rory's essay, it's heartfelt, eye-opening, and helps others impacted by cancer know they are not alone,” the spokesperson said.

Rory will be attending Virginia Commonwealth University in the fall.
