VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. — 'Tis the season for spreading holiday cheer by giving back to our communities. The Armed Services YMCA of Hampton Roads hosted the 28th annual five-star Military Family Recognition Luncheon to celebrate the men, women and families who do even more than already giving their lives to protect this country every day of the year.

The event on Friday rewarded families who were nominated by their Commands, family, friends and peers for participating in numerous volunteer activities outside of work. Families had an opportunity to take the stage to share more about their efforts and the importance of getting your children involved.

“I am completely honored to be here to honor all 5 families for what you have done. So many people’s lives have been changed; have been lifted up...it is an honor to be in the presence of people who have big hearts," says keynote speaker: Specialist Justin “JP” Lane, a Purple Heart Recipient and retired army vet.

Emceeing the event was News 3's very own Kurt Williams who has also featured a couple of the families on our “Everyday Hero” segment.

Families and attendees were served at the Westin in Town Center thanks to event sponsors who say they aim to continually recognize those who serve their country and commit to their local community.
