HAMPTON, Va. — Basketball is one of the top sports for those who play in the Special Olympics.
In Hampton, teams of all ages and abilities were able to play alongside their friends in the 2023 Special Olympics Basketball Tournament.
The tournament was held at the Boo Williams Sportsplex in Hampton and included both half-court and full-court games.
The Special Olympics Basketball Tournament allows those with intellectual disabilities to gain new skills both physically and socially.
Global Messenger Ambassador and Defensive player, Kaitlin Dykes tells News 3, events like this are important for people like her.
"Special Olympics is important because it helps children and adults with intellectual disabilities," said Dykes.
When players participate in unified sporting events like this it becomes a learning experience for them.
This tournament is just one of many initiatives hosted by the Special Olympics team that helps brings communities together and foster the spirit of inclusion for all.
