NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - Prom season can be a magical time of year for many girls; however, it can also be very expensive. One Peninsula organization is helping offset the cost by providing free dresses to girls in need.

The organization is called "Queen In A Dress." Founder Nakeya Green started collecting prom dresses, shoes, accessories and new makeup several years ago, and every year the event grows.

She tells News 3 she started giving back in memory of her mother, who died of cancer.

“I do this because my mom was my rock and during my years of childhood, and things of that nature she always instilled in me to do everything you can for your community,” said Green.

Melissa Edens' daughter received a free dress from Green last year.

“It was heartwarming," said Edens. "It was very nice that that there are people who are not only willing to be so giving but who are able to make others feel special,” said Edens.

This year's dress giveaway is happening from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday, Mar. 3 in Newport News at Event Central LLC located at 9912 Hosier St. They're expecting more than 300 girls. They're still looking for more dresses, shoes, accessories, and new makeup.
