Old Dominion University students are using words to help get animals at the Norfolk SPCA adopted.

Writers in Community, a nonprofit program that runs through ODU's master's in fine arts (MFA) creative writing program, is partnering with the organization to write bios for adoptable animals to encourage individuals and families to bring them home.

The university says the novelists, poets and essayists will also share photos of their own pets with reflections on how they've impacted their lives.

As a part of the campaign, supporters are encouraged to share photos of pets they've adopted through the Norfolk SPCA on social media with the hashtag #findyournewbestfriend.

The adoptable animals, which include everything from dogs to bunnies, were photographed by MFA alumna and nature photographer Francesca Santos.

People interested in adopting from the Norfolk SPCA can meet the animals everyday except Tuesday from 1 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. at their adoption center at 916 Ballentine Boulevard.
