NORFOLK, Va. — Student volunteers a part of the ASEZ organization at Old Dominion University hosted a cleanup service event Monday in order to help reduce crime rates in Norfolk.
ASEZ is a group of university student volunteers from the Church of God, who act to solve practical problems around the world. The campus clean-up is a call to action towards reducing the amount of crime that happens within the city.
Organization President Sonia Moreno said events like this help spread awareness of the ongoing crime issues happening across Hampton Roads.
"Our main purpose here is to reduce crime, but in what way- it's shown through the broken window theory that actually when the en is cleaner it reduces crime, and what better way to reduce crime than to start our clean-up here on campus, said Moreno."
Volunteers picked helped rake leaves and picked up trash near the ODU stadium.
Norfolk City Councilwoman Danica Royster also came out to show her support and collaborate with the organization in taking strides to help combat the environmental problems one street at a time.
"The reason we are out here today is because they reached out and said hey, we want to be able to contribute to something in the community that's positive and as well as bring some volunteers in and see how we can be impactful, said Royster."
The ASEZ organization hopes more events like this will help create multi-generational change for both the city and the environment.
