NORFOLK, Va. - Assembly Norfolk hosted a unique concert Wednesday night in the hopes of better exposing the art of opera to communities of color.

Held on World Opera Day, "Opera For Us" was put together in partnership with Creatives for Virginia and soprano Denise Battle.

Organizers tell News 3 the program's mission was to bring opera to Black and brown communities in the hopes that it would inspire them to see how their stories could fit into a different form of art. Also, combining opera with other forms and genres of music.

The program included several performers of color, including mezzo-soprano Jacyn Gibbs, soprano Jamilla Ford, cellist Josh Sierra-Delgado and actress Nyaira Jones.

Del. Jackie Glass (D-Norfolk) also spoke at the event.

A portion of the proceeds from the event went to support Opera For Us and Creatives for Virginia programming.
