NORFOLK, Va. — When big events happen that affect all of us, it can bring out the best in people and that's what we found driving around Norfolk’s Bayview neighborhood.

Norfolk resident Steven Baltzer is from Pennsylvania, so he’s used to shoveling snow. But when he moved to Norfolk several years ago, he figured he could ditch his snow plowing equipment.

“Usually, they have better technology than a broom. It was on my back porch, and I tried to see if it would work. And here we go,” he said. “Not exactly the snow blower from up north, but it does the trick.”

After he swept his sidewalk, he headed next door to his neighbor’s house.

“Unless I tell them, they probably won’t know about it,” he said.

They’re out of town, and he didn’t want them to come home to a snowy, icy mess.

“I’ll do up to the house. I took a picture last time because he would have never seen his house in the snow,” he added.

In other parts of Bayview, I found Jim helping his elderly neighbor.

“Taking care of her car. She told me I could clean her car, and I told her I’d be real gentle with it because she just bought it from an elderly friend down the street,” he said.

He’s lived here for 11 years, and he says the residents in Bayview routinely help each other out.

“I had planned on shoveling her sidewalk, but she got out here and did that before me.”

These gals on Atlans Avenue were in good spirits and big fans of News 3.

“We’re having a Beverly party, the girl from TV,” they said.

They tell me everyone on their street looks out for each other and those who have to work, regardless of the weather.

“I’ll put the salt down so it doesn’t get slippery and icy because I was worried about the mailman,” one of them said.

“I had a limb come down, and the people over there came over and cleaned it all up for us,” another added. “It’s just a good neighborhood; it really is.”

Looking out for each other is what makes the residents of Hampton Roads positively Hampton Roads.
