NORFOLK, Va. — Studies show early child development programs are healthy for children before they start preschool. Some programs can be costly, but the Slover Library in Norfolk is offering a free weekly class for little ones to learn and play.

Coordinators call it "Babygarten," which is essentially kindergarten for babies. An instructor teaches parents and children under the age of two about colors, music, foods, and reading. They interact with other children and families.

During the pandemic, the class was virtual, but now it's back in person. Organizers said they enjoy watching the babies progress as they socialize with others.

"From birth to 24 months is the time for them to introduce to stories, introduce them to rhymes, introduce them to playful movement and other resources. They start loving the library, loving the programs, and are interacting with other kids,” said Tanisha McRae-Mcclain, the youth program coordinator.

Even on the first day, some parents said they can see the positive difference from the class.

"So we were invited to attend the Babygarten today by our friends and neighbors so this was our first time being able to join. I feel like they do a really great job creating a variety of opportunities for all ages and to have a lot of options for this age group and to be able to meet with other parents, is really a nice gift," said Diana Schofield, a parent.

The program is funded by the City of Norfolk. Sessions are held every Friday morning at 10:30 on the second floor in the youth library.
